The year is over

The year is over, today is the last day and in just 11 hours I will celebrate the New Year with my family and friends. In Spain I usually have dinner at home with my family, at midnight we eat the 12 grapes and then, I go outside with my friends.
During this week I have been very busy. I saw my friends, I spent time with my family, I read a book, I went shopping, and I play ludo, my favorite table game! I won my parents the last three days, and this is incredible because I used to lose always!
Yesterday was a sad day in Spain. The terrorist group ETA putted another bomb at the new terminal in Barajas airport. This bomb can mean the stop of the cease-fire of nine months and the beginning of innocent deaths and fears in the population.

And now in Spanish...

Here or there?

After four days here at home, with my family and friends I already miss Drake and all my friends, classmates, the classes, the professors, the campus, the weird American food, my Spanish students, the newspaper, my Spanglish while I am talking, the coffees at Mars Cafe, etc.
I have been in two big family meals with a lot of Spanish homemade food by my grandmothers, I have been walking around the streets in the center of my city, I saw some friends, I went shopping, I gave some presents and I received others, I read Spanish newspapers and magazines, I drank coffees, I took more pictures, and everything is perfect after five months outside home.
Now, I think that a part of my mind is in Oviedo and the other is at Des Moines.

Here at home

I am in Spain! I arrived yesterday at my hometown, Oviedo, at 8 p.m. My parents and grandparents went to the airport to pick me up.
The travel was very long, but all the planes were on time and my baggage this time arrived with me. In the stop I made in Madrid, I saw two of my friends from Nebrija University because they went to the airport to see me.
The last plane was crazy. I was very nervous because I wanted to see my family and the 50 minutes were amazing, because the time did not pass.
Today I will have a big dinner with a part of my family and tomorrow another big lunch with the other part of my family.
In my home we do not celebrate Santa Claus today, so I have to wait for the presents of the The Three Wise Men on January, 5th.
I hope you have been good during all the year and you receive a lot of presents!

And now in Spanish...

The semester is almost finished

I am almost done with my finals and the courses I have at Drake during this semester. In a few hours I have to give to a professor a part of the final exam of "Print Media Editing" that we can do at home and everything will be finished.
But now, it is 2 a.m. and I can not sleep. In just two days I am going back to Spain for Christmas, I will see my family and friends. I will be in my city, Oviedo, and I will go to Madrid, to see my friends and my university there.
I am worried about the weather and the planes, because I have to make four stops, and if I miss a plane, I know that I am not going to arrive for Christmas because all the plane tickets are sold out.
Should I take baggage with me? When I came to Drake in August, by huge baggage was lost between Chicago and Des Moines, and it did no appeared yet. All my clothes, memories, and things were inside, and it was very sad. Nowadays, four months later, I did not have any money from United Airlines. And on Friday I am going to fly with them again. :-(
Another sad thing sad is that three of my European friends here at Drake are coming back home like me, but they are not coming back to Drake in January. They are great people and I am going to miss them a lot.
I am almost all the day with one of them, and he was my travel buddy during all this semester to Las Vegas, Chicago, Miami y New York.
But let´s see it in the other way. I have new three friends and I have an excuse to see them, and Italy and Austria.

And now in Spanish...

Ahora, cuatro meses después, no he recibido ningún cheque de United Airlines.

After 28 years, Drake basketball won Iowa

Drake-Iowa 047
On Saturday I went to the basketball game with some friends because they told me that this game was the most important. All of us were wearing blue colors and it was amazing to see Knapp Center full of blue.
Drake-Iowa 001
When I arrived there I noticed that it was a big game. It was full of people, television cameras, and the fans did not stop cheering up at any moment.
Drake-Iowa 082
Drake won during all the game and the final result was 75-59.
During the rest of the weekend I was studying for my "Communications in Society" exam, which I had on Monday at 7.30 a.m.
Also I was doing a web page about DULAP for my "Web Page Design" class.

On Sunday night there was a special breakfast at 11 p.m. served by president Maxwell and other staff members. It was funny to go in the middle of our "Communications in Society" exam review to have breakfast. These things have never happened before in my university back at home.

And now in Spanish...

Two crazy weeks

painting windows 010
These two last weeks before Christmas are crazy for me. I have a lot of things to do, but I have to say that it is because I like a lot what I am doing.
This week is when I have to write papers, have group meetings, develop a web page about DULAP, write some articles for The Times-Delphic, prepare my last classes of Spanish, and study for finals that are next week.
And of course, I count how many less days are before I go to Spain on Friday, December 22.

And now in Spanish...

My name is Rita and bla, bla, bla...

snow 004
My full name is Rita Maria Alvarez Tudela, but you can just called me Rita.
Why is my name so long? Because I am Spanish and we have two last names: Alvarez and Tudela are mine. And then, my mother's name is Rita Maria and they decide to give the same to me.
I am 20, a junior exchange student, the one with comical English. I am a traveler, a camera woman, and I'm passionate about journalism.
I miss my family and friends. But I am here at Drake because I really love to study abroad, meet new people, get to know a new culture, and this experience it is great.

And now in Spanish...
